Prison Island is also known as Changuu Island, the
nickname came from the island being used by some sultans
of Zanzibar to detain enslaved people.
Now a tourist attraction, Prison Island was once a place
where slaves were detained and at one point, it also
served as a place of quarantine.
On one side of Prison Island is a refuge for giant sea tortoises, originally a gift from the Seychelles. A 5 minute walk across the island leads to the former prison ruins. Though in their successful days it was a torturous place to be, nowadays the ocean cliffs, the overgrowth of the plants on the stone walls, and the view of the turquoise ocean is gorgeous
While you are on this island, you can swim, snorkel and take pictures with giant tortoises.
See the colorful schools of black snappers, orange lined triggerfish, spotted garfish, barracudas, longfin bannerfish, emperor angelfish, rabbitfish, clown triggerfish, and many more. The old prison still remains standing, providing shelter for some of the giant tortoises which can now only be found on this island, and the cells.
Its very easy to combine Prison Island tour with Stone Town tour. Its a wise decision especially if you come from further away from the island. You can stay for sunset drinks too.
